Rice in the Seven Arts

In collaboration with the National Museum, the ARF-Philippines with support from ARF Regional, organized a symposium on "Rice in the Seven Arts" on February 20-21, 2003. This Symposium recognized that rice is not only about science, food, nutrition and economics. In the rice growing and rice consuming countries like the Philippines, this most important crop is interwoven into the national identity, heritage and way of life. Expressions of this are found in the various art forms in the culture of the people.

National art leaders presented well-researched and crafted papers. These are: Overview of Rice in the Philippine Culture (Florentino H. Hornedo), Rice in Music (Jose S. Buenconsejo), Rice Dance (Ramon A. Obusan), Rice in Theatre Arts (Fernando C. Josef), Rice in Cinema (Eddie Romero), Rice in Visual Arts (Patrick D. Flores), Rice in Architecture (Augusto F. Villalon), Rice in Literature (F. Sionil Jose). These papers along with comments from equally well-known art personalities will be published as a book expected to come out in the first quarter of 2004 to celebrate the International Year of Rice.
